Just before midnight on Friday November 1, 2019 Arturo Velez Garcia stopped the 18 wheeler he was driving to help the driver of a disabled vehicle on IH-35 N. Mr. Garcia stopped behind a Nissan sedan that had a tire blow out on the highway. Mr. Garcia exited to assist the other driver, and as the two were walking they were struck by a white Chevrolet SUV. The driver of the Chevrolet fled the scene continuing south on IH-35 N without stopping to render aid to the two drivers.
Mr. Garcia was transported to SAMMC by EMS in critical condition. The other driver was transported to Northeast Baptist Hospital with injuries to their lower extremities. Mr. Garcia did not survive the injuries he sustained as a result of the crash and died on November 11, 2019. The Chevrolet is believed to be a white 2016 Traverse with damage to the passenger side.
